Font locking of some Unicode characters fails

I tried

  (modify-syntax-entry ?ℤ "w" table)

in haskell-mode.el, but it has no effect. Strangely, when I do

  (modify-syntax-entry ?ℤ "_" table)

my ℤ's turn blue. So it has some effect.
