 Thanks Simon, your guess was right.

 I put two patches that should fix this ticket at
 https://github.com/feuerbach/haddock-1 (branch hiddenInstances). Could
 someone please review them?

 They are based on ghc-7.4.1-release (for testing purposes), but it
 shouldn't be too hard to rebase them to the latest changes.
